Acupuncture

What is acupuncture & what does it treat?

Acupuncture encourages the body’s own innate ability to heal itself. This is done by inserting hair thin needles (sterile and disposable) with intention at very precise acupuncture points. For thousands of years acupuncture has been used to treat a wide variety of ailments including muscular skeletal pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia, allergies and digestive disorders among others.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

The classical Chinese explanation is that channels of energy run in patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up in others. Needling the acupuncture points can unblock the obstructions and re-establish the regular flow through the meridians. The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points can release myofascial constrictions and stimulate the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones, which influence the bodies own internal regulating system. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities. Many people are pleased to discover the insertions of needles can be nearly painless and that sessions are deeply relaxing.
