If you’re a runner, triathlete, and/or cyclist, no doubt you’ve heard a lot of opinions on technique. “Run on the balls of your feet” and “Ride with your knees tight to your top tube” are examples of common advice. However, these techniques are not the best for everyone all of the time: stress fractures on the feet of a runner who insisted on wearing minimal shoes, torn acetabular labrum on a triathlete who rode with his knees smashed on his top tube, and many lower leg issues with runners forcing themselves onto the balls of their feet, are examples of patients I’ve seen. This is not to say these techniques are ‘bad’, I am saying that if you are having symptoms, then it’s possible your technique needs to be modified to suite your unique structure and biomechanics. I specialize in manual therapy and biomechanical evaluation for athletes of all types—if you are outside of the bay area, look for a well qualified (ie professional license D.C., D.P.T.) , experienced, and well reviewed practitioner in you area.
